  MENORCA
 
You will probably know Menorca as a holiday island. About 70,000 people live there all the year round. Many people work in tourism and others in the cheese and leather industries. There are two main towns Mahon (famous for mayonnaise and shown in the picture on the right) and Ciutedella. Some of the families in the study live in the countryside.

The Menorca team began recruiting in 1995

They invited every pregnant mother on the island that year to take part
There are 485 children on the island and it is much easier to keep track of them than in Barcelona
